Growing up in the heart of the Colorado Rockies bestowed Todd with certain talents that have proved essential to his success as a photographer: a keen sense of the elements, the weather, the light, the seasons, and a certain athletic agility that his friends describe as being “like a mountain goat”. Being the son of a renowned architect and an attentive German mother bestowed him other useful talents: an eye for detail, proportion and design, a high degree of spatial awareness, a Teutonic work ethic and near-OCD sense of organization, a penchant for quality, and a natural ability to tell in an instant if the horizon is perfectly straight in the viewfinder. And with a curious mind, Todd continues his self-education in the fields of geography, art and visual psychology. Todd creates compelling, genuine images that are driven by a high degree of concept, forethought and calculated planning. He plans on ‘being at the right place at the right time’, or preferably, about 20 minutes early. The effort Todd expends prior to pushing the shutter button yields images that are minimally processed, visually pure and well balanced. As he says, “Its akin to really good food. The better your raw ingredients, and the less you manipulate them, the better the finished product. I do love all the tools we have available in digital imaging, but I always use them with restraint and respect paid to the original image. I think when you become overly obsessed with the tools, you forget the art” When Todd picked up his first camera at the age of 21, his perspective of the world immediately became more refined. He found the process of selective vision through a lens to be highly intriguing and surprisingly intuitive. The big epiphany came during a photo workshop with the late Galen Rowell, Todd’s first and most influential mentor. In less than a week, Todd began to see how all the disciplines he loved could be woven into a meaningful, multi-layered career with photography as the hub in the center. There was no looking back. In the years that followed, Todd had the great privilege to learn directly from other mentors such as John Shaw and Art Wolfe, who opened his mind to new concepts, taught him invaluable skills, and although superstars in their fields, took the time to answer so many of Todd’s naïve questions. Today, Todd enjoys continuing that spirit of mentorship through coaching his own protégés. Todd’s images have been selected for numerous regional and national publications, advertisements, high-end marketing campaigns and editorial pieces. His thoughtful, efficient approach has generated recent commissions in Austria, Italy, Norway, Canada, Costa Rica, Bahamas and Turks & Caicos. Now celebrating his tenth year as a professional photographer, Todd looks forward to sharing his vision with new clients around the world and making a meaningful contribution to the awareness of the Earth’s natural treasures.
